2  What is the origin of the American Bill of Rights?

3 Write down what you know about the Magna Carta.

5  Ordered Government- Colonists made local governments based on the ones in England.  Limited Government - They believed that there are certain rights that even the government can’t take away.  Representative Government - They also believed that the people need a say in the government’s decisions.

6  The Magna Carta - In 1215, a group of people forced King John to sign a document that limited his power and give the people rights  Life, liberty, and property  Giving them due process of law.

7  The Petition of Right - Parliament slowly grew in power for 400 years.  In 1628, they forced King Charles I to sign the Petition of Right, which guaranteed a free trial to criminals

9  The English Bill of Rights - After years of chaos, Parliament finally offered a permanent solution, the English Bill of Rights.  It meant that the monarchs couldn’t control the military in times of peace, and confirmed what the other documents said.  All 3 documents have affected English and American governments.

12  Royal Colonies- The colonies started to do things such as grow tobacco without the king’s approval  He tightened his grip on 8 colonies: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia  He took away their charter, and most of their freedoms.

13  Using the 3-section chart, compare the Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights, and the Petition of Right.  Use your books pg. 31-32

16  The Proprietary Colonies- Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware were proprietary colonies.  Although they had less power than the king, proprietors controlled their section of land.  Lord Baltimore owned Maryland, and William Penn owned Pennsylvania and Delaware.  Pennsylvania was the only one who was unicameral (having one house-government)

17  The Charter Colonies- Connecticut and Rhode Island were charter colonies. They were havens for people who practiced different religions, but only white, male property owners could vote for their governor. However, they are still considered the most free of all the colonies.
