GOVERNMENT WHAT IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF GOVERNMENT?
English COLONISTS expected certain rights that came from living under an English GOVERNMENT Rights were first established by the MAGNA CARTA – “Great Charter” - Written in 1215 Guaranteed rights to English NOBLEMEN and FREEMEN (Not everyone!) King needed $$ MONEY $$ from noblemen / Made a deal… Magna Carta
RIGHTS GIVEN TO BRITISH No __PROPERTY__ can be taken by King Council must agree to TAXES (Later becomes Parliament) WITNESSES needed for TRIAL – not just an official’s __WORD__ Punishment determined by __JURY __ of _PEERS_ (equals) GREATLY LIMITED/REDUCED THE POWER OF THE KING!
ENGLISH BILL OF RIGHTS 1689 William and Mary made K & Q by PARLIAMENT – part of the “GLORIOUS Revolution” RIGHTS King needs approval of PARLIAMENT to MAKE & cancel TAXES Members of PARLIAMENT are ELECTED No high FINES or cruel PUNISHMENTS Right to _COMPLAIN_ w/o being arrested (Sounds like Freedom of SPEECH doesn’t it????)
ENGLISH BILL OF RIGHTS English laws are made by PARLIAMENT – NOT by the __KING___! GREATLY LIMITED/REDUCED THE POWER OF THE KING!
JOHN PETER ZENGER 1735 Publisher of NY Weekly / was _CRITICAL_ of NY Governor and was ARRESTED Jury found him NOT GUILTY because he wrote the TRUTH!!! RIGHTS English citizens have a right to write the TRUTH FREEDOM OF PRESS
RIGHTS OF ENGLISHMEN IN 1750 British adopted a policy of SALUTARY NEGLECT towards the colonies (TURN TO PAGE 144) - “hands off” policy / leave the colonies alone to govern themselves Everything is good… Rights of Englishmen (including British colonies) in 1750 Freedom of SPEECH Freedom of PRESS Right to a Fair TRIAL (WITNESSES) Right to a Jury of your PEERS No Cruel or Unusual PUNISHMENTS Right to ELECT people who make laws and taxes
