Clause – A word group that contains a verb and its subject and that is used as a sentence or as part of a sentence. Where are you now? after we won the game

Independent Clause Independent Clause – Expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence. He made thousands of prints of his work. Her art helped to stir social unrest.

Subordinate Clause Subordinate Clause – Does not express a complete thought and cannot stand by itself as a sentence. Whoever knows the song As we were singing

Subordinate Clauses There are four types of subordinate clause: 1.Adjective Clause 2.Noun Clause 3.Adverb Clause 4.Elliptical Clause

Adjective Clause Adjective Clause – A subordinate clause that modifies a noun or a pronoun. The report that Diego wrote was on the Battle of Little Bighorn. Mark Twain is the writer whose books I have enjoyed the most.

Noun Clause Noun Clause – A subordinate clause that is used as a noun. How students can apply for college loans was the speaker’s topic. My suggestion is that we all meet again tomorrow.

Adverb Clause Adverb Clause – A subordinate clause that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb. The squirrel ran as though it were being chased by a cat. She attracts huge audiences wherever she performs.

Elliptical Clause Elliptical Clause – Part of a clause that may be left out when its meaning can be clearly understood in the context of the sentence. – Most elliptical clauses are adverb clauses Australia is smaller than the other continents [are small]. When [you are] taking notes, use your own words.
