1 The French and Indian War This was a war between England and the French over the control of North America. This war is fought over the course of seven years. England will win this war. France lost almost everything except Canada. a large debtEngland is left with a large debt from the war.

2 Britain (England) & Taxes England decides to raises taxes on the colonies to pay for the war. The colonies did not respond well to this idea. They want representation in Parliament if they are going to be taxed by the government. “No Taxation without Representation”“No Taxation without Representation”

3 Important Taxes The Stamp ActThe Stamp Act – This taxed paper products. (An everyday item) Colonists go nuts over it. They boycott the tax and organize protest. The Stamp Act is repealedThe Stamp Act is repealed. This was the biggest mistake Parliament could have made. 4 Townshend Act This was a tax on almost every item an individual used. It even taxed tea. This new tax enrages the colonies.

7 The Boston Tea Party The Tea Act – This allowed the British East India company to sell tea directly to the colonists. “The Sons of Liberty”“The Sons of Liberty” – dressed up as Indians and dumped the tea into the harbor. Intolerable Acts.The British government passed the Intolerable Acts. These acts were created to punish the colonies and the city of Boston.

8 The Revolution Begins The First Continental Congress – This is a gathering of colonial leaders that were examining our relationship with Great Britain. Patriots – Colonists who chose to fight for independence. Paul Revere will attempt to ride to Concord & Lexington to warn the militia that the British were coming.

9 England vs. Colonies Leader King George III. Government: Parliament English, Redcoats, British, Great Britain Leader: George Washington Government: Continental Congress Colonists, militia

10 Lexington & Concord MinutemenMinutemen – Local militia that got their nickname because they could be ready to fight at a minute’s notice. The RedcoatsThe Redcoats (British Soldiers) meet the minutemen outside of Lexington and the first shots of the revolution were fired. “The Shot Heard Round the World”.

11 No turning back!! While the British marched back to Boston the colonists shot at them from the woods and killed as many as a 100 soldiers.

12 The Second Continental Congress This time the congress prepared for war and peace. Continental ArmyThey authorized the creation of the Continental Army. George WashingtonThey appointed George Washington as its leader. Olive Branch Petition.They also sent King George III the Olive Branch Petition. 13 The Causes of the Revolution The debit from the French and Indian War. The question of representation in our government. Commerce – Trade and how the colonies made money. The distance between England and the 13 colonies led to self rule.

14 Bunker Hill This battle took place on Breed’s Hill. The British took this hill. However, it was extremely costly for them. This battle for the Continental Army and the Patriots was an important moral victory. THIS GAVE THE COLONIES THE HOPE THEY COULD WIN THEIR INDEPENDENCE They proved they could line up and fight the most powerful army in the world and survive.
