Highlights from the JCSP Library at P.C.C., Falcarragh January to April 2010 Compiled by Librarian Ms. S. Ball

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 In January 2010, 2 nd year JCSP students worked on writing news stories during library class. They then practised presenting these to the class and finally recorded each other reading them out in the style of a television evening news programme.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 In February and March 2010 the focus for JCSP students was on literacy. Comprehension board games were used in library class with 1 st year students. These games add a fun element to reading and comprehension and are particularly useful for visual and kinesthetic learners.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 In March 2010 Irish History Live came to the Library at P.C.C and did four shows for students. These two 1 st year JCSP boys were very taken with some of the guns, and yes, they were pointing them at the librarian!

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 This 3 rd year JCSP student had trouble taking the extremely heavy chain mail off (Irish History Live show).

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 Since the Easter holidays, we have been working on numeracy in library class. The Flashmaster electronic maths games have proven very popular. Here three 1 st year JCSP students are opening the boxes and setting up the handsets for the first time.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 Playaway audio books are always a winner. Students very quickly get lost in a story.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 In April 2010, the library funded six new laptops which were bought for use by JCSP students These are loaded with literacy and numeracy software. This 3 rd year student is working on Number Shark, a software programme designed to improve numeracy.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 These 3 rd year students are getting used to using some of the new laptops in the library. Apart from having literacy and numeracy software, these laptops also have wireless access to the library network and the Internet.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 In March, each 1 st year English class prepared short dramas and sketches which they then performed in the library in front of the entire 1 st year as well as staff. 1 st year JCSP students performed a series of action poems.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 After each 1 st year class performed their dramas and sketches, the entire 1 st year group gave a performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. Above are some of the 1 st year JCSP students who took part, dressed up as zombies.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 Make-a-book This year Rang Aoibheann, 2 nd year JCSP, have been working extremely hard on their Make-a-book initiative. Between January and April 2010, most of their two library classes a week were devoted to working on this project. The idea for their book came from the celebrity chef initiative which they took part in in September 2009. A local chef came to the school and all of the JCSP students had an opportunity to make dishes including American style pancakes with crispy bacon, bananas and maple syrup and barbecue chicken with mashed potatoes. Rang Aoibheann then began a cross-curricular initiative focusing on food and cookery. They completed research in history, geography, maths, English, Gaeilge and library class. They then compiled this work into a book which was sent to the Make-a book exhibition along with a larger- than-life model of a chef which they created with help from their woodwork and art teachers.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 In woodwork, the 2 nd year JCSP students mark out the shape of the chef on plywood and then cut him out, sanding around all the edges for a smooth finish.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 Students tear strips of paper which are then stuck on to the cut-out of the chef.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 The paper is plastered over and the chef is beginning to come to life.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 The chef is finally coming together... JCSP students paint on his uniform and his face.

Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola 2010 The culmination of all the hard work – the trip to the Make-a-book exhibition a the Civic Offices in Dublin on 22 nd April.
