3 Information Literacy in North Ayrshire: from theory into practice Primary School Library Project Based on motivation and evidence from Early Intervention initiative: book corners, literacy work and demand from schools Three year project 2002-2005 Funded by North Ayrshire Educational Services, permanent McCrone funding and subscriptions from all schools 2 permanent librarians supporting primary and special schools

4 Information Literacy in North Ayrshire: from theory into practice Primary School Library Project Aim: to develop the information / literacy skills of children in North Ayrshire schools Advice and support for SMT: development planning and quality improvement Infrastructure (accommodation, resources, information management systems) Support for teaching staff (PERCS, training, info lit toolkit, web resources) Support for pupils (training, resources, skills, supported study) All 53 primary schools involved Special schools fully involved

5 Information Literacy in North Ayrshire: from theory into practice Towards Information Literacy: a toolkit Based on a PhD framework of 5-14 information literacy skills, from 5-14 curriculum Education/curriculum terminology Progressive through Levels A – E (although levels not noted on pupil worksheets) Fiction/Non-Fiction Cross-curricular Teacher guidance Fully compatible with A Curriculum for Excellence

6 Information Literacy in North Ayrshire: from theory into practice Piloted in six primary schools by Primary Education Resource Co-ordinators (Percs) between December 2004 and February 2005 Included meetings and consultation with Senior Management Teams and teaching staff Delivery to small groups of targeted classes Also piloted in two secondary schools by the Learning Support department Information Literacy Toolkit: Pilot

7 Information Literacy in North Ayrshire: from theory into practice Launched in May 2005 to NA Literacy coordinators Authors of ILT and Percs gave presentations about background and pilot to ILT Primary schools were asked to bid for Percs’ time in schools over the next two sessions Twelve schools ‘signed-up’ immediately with another 15 in 2006/2007 A timetable was given to interested schools and Percs each worked in two schools each term with either one class for up to seven weeks or four classes two weeks each. 23 Information Literacy Toolkit: : Adaptation of Toolkit: Supported Study Sessions based on BBC’s ‘Breathing Places’ Supported study: all P6 children in all North Ayrshire libraries P4/5 homework collections in all libraries (and existing P6/7 collections) Homework Clubs in data zone libraries: Supported Study Officer

25 Information Literacy in North Ayrshire: from theory into practice The Future CPD courses for teaching staff to continue to raise awareness of ILT for ACfE, author visits, national reading initiatives Introduce Probationer teachers to ILT through CPD programme ILT to be included in new ICT programme of Study for primary schools Continue to work with Secondary School Librarians to share good practice Use ILT in public libraries with Children’s Library Staff and young readers
