4 National Curriculum Levels By the end of year 5, children should be a high level 3 (3A) or a low level 4 (4C) Levels are under 4 headings in national Curriculum : Using & applying Maths Number & Algebra Shape, space & Measures Handling data T:\GENERAL\assessment.doc

5 Mental/Oral starters Practical mental starters may involve using whiteboards & pens. For example : ‘SHOW ME’ 114 + 74= Find the difference between 99 and 156 7x9= 96÷8= What is ⅜ of 24?

6 Mental/Oral starters cont… Interactive whiteboards give access to a multitude of Mathematical games www.mathszone.co.uk Math Playground These should be used at home as well if possible

7 Maths Homework Homework always relates to the week’s topic or problem areas identified by the teacher. Maths homework is handed out on different days for both classes. If your child is unable to complete the homework over the weekend, please send in a letter to explain why. Otherwise, your child may be kept in at playtime.

10 Planning Circles Gathering ideas and content: Visual literacy, drama, speaking and listening, Short writing opportunities Planning, Shared writing, Independent and guided writing: Creative outcomes Phase 3 Shared reading: decoding understanding text analysis Phase 1 Phase 2

12 An example of work in Literacy The expectation for 30 minutes work is between half an A4 side and a whole A4 side Marking differs depending on the nature of the work EITHER a positive comment & area for improvement OR Success criteria with smiley faces Personal targets are in front of books

14 Literacy Homework Literacy homework is handed out on different days for both classes. Spelling homework is given out on different days for both classes. The children complete the activity and learn 16 words. ‘High Frequency words’ to be learnt by the end of Year 5.

17 Humanities Autumn Term : Victorian Britain (History) Spring 1: Water (Geography) Spring 2: Settlements (Geography) Summer 1 : What’s in the news? (Geography) Summer 2 : Flatford – Comparing localities (Geography)

18 Art & DT 1 st half of each term is Art. 2 nd half is Design & Technology Autumn 1 : Objects & Meanings (Art) Autumn 2 : Designing a Musical Instrument (DT) Spring 1 : Containers (Art) Spring 2 : Moving toys (DT)

19 Art & DT cont…. Summer 1 : Talking textiles (Art) Summer 2 : Biscuits (DT) We may need to ask for a contribution towards DT projects, usually £1 per term for replacing components used Art may involve collecting objects/resources from home

20 P.E. PE kit should be clearly named and include : Navy or black shorts (joggers in winter) White T-shirt Black plimsolls/black trainers in winter Long hair MUST be tied up No jewellery (stud earrings will be taped up) No tights!

21 P.E. cont….. Swimming is on Thursdays and takes place at Northolt pool. We travel by coach. ALL children are expected to attend. Swimming kit must be brought in a separate bag and should include: ‘Speedos’ or tight swimming trunks for boys One-piece swimming costumes for girls Towel Deodorant (only if usually worn) Swimming kits MUST go home on the same day!! All girls and boys MUST wear a swimming cap

22 PE cont… In school, children will be taught: Autumn Term : Gym/Dance, Rugby/Netball Spring term : Swimming, Cricket/Tennis Summer term : Gym/Dance, Athletics

23 General issues Attendance is very important. The required national expectation is 95% or above. If time is needed to be taken off for a holiday, request a sheet from the office. If your child is ill, either phone the school on the day to notify them, or send in a letter when your child returns.

24 General issues Correct uniform must be worn every day. Please ensure that it is all clearly named. Trainers may be brought in for use at break- time, but otherwise black school shoes must be worn. No jewellery will be allowed to be worn in school, except stud earrings & religious jewellery with an explanatory note.
