1 First Grade Curriculum Night ACA- Primary August 19, 2013 Mrs. Alvarado, Mrs. Anderson, Ms. Attaway, Mrs. Cardenas, Mrs. Jeffreys, Mrs. Marsic, Mrs. Partain, Mrs. Samuel

2 School Hours & Class Schedule School Hours: 8:00-3:00 (Students can be dropped off no earlier than 7:30) Music, Art, Technology, Spanish, PE, Library Math, Language Arts, and Reading, are taught every day. Social Studies and Science are rotated throughout the year.

3 Reading Program Texas Treasures (McGraw Hill) Teaches phonics, grammar, spelling Wonderful literature Great vocabulary building Good for all reading levels Spelling Tests Spelling list on Monday Test on Friday

4 Creative Writing Journals are not edited Published work is edited D’Nealian handwriting

5 Math Saxon Math Very hands on, inquiry based Spiraling format

6 Core Knowledge The Core Knowledge philosophy provides a carefully sequenced set of skills and content with an emphasis on the knowledge that is most useful and productive for children living in American society today. What your First Grader Needs to Know by E.D. Hirsch Civilization, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, History of world religions, early explorers, American Revolution, modern civilization: Mexico, hunters & nomads

7 Home Folders & Planners Binder will include the student planner, study sheets, citizenship sheet, and the red folder. Check the planner daily as we will be communicating events, behavior, and assignments. Red Folder will contain parent notes, graded papers, and school information.

8 Evaluation 9 weeks Report cards with number grades Progress reports DRA for reading

9 Lunch 11:25-11:55 Please send any utensils that are needed for lunch. Practice opening items and containers. Easy to eat and easy to open. Dry healthy snacks are best. Water Bottles are allowed (sport tops preferred). Birthdays- You are allowed to bring anything for a birthday and it will be celebrated at 2:30. Contact the teacher for allergies. Advanced Notice is required. Snacks

10 Uniforms Parker Uniforms (non-negotiable) Spirit shirt with uniform shorts on Friday Lucky Buck Friday- Students may wear jeans and a spirit shirt or uniform top for $1. You may also pay for the year in advance or pay each Friday.

11 Absences Very important to be in school in first grade. If child is sick, make up work will be provided. If make up work is requested, parent should call or email by 9:30am. Homework and Health After school program from 4-6 Certified teachers Sign up through office Contact Coach Heard for more information at jheard@acaedu.net.

12 Carpool Dismissal will begin at 3:00. Stay in the pickup line to get your child. Walking up to get your child is not Allowed in the carpool line. Any student not picked up by 3:35 will go to late pick-up and a fee will be incurred. Any child left after 4:00 will be taken to H & H and an additional fee will be required. A-L is a bright green sign. M-Z is a bright orange sign. Please make sure that you are always in the correct line.
