Ch. 27 Lesson 3

2 Muscle, joint, and bone injuries
Strain = a tear in the muscle. Sprain = an injury to ligaments around a joint Call 911 if : The pain is severe. The joint appears deformed.

3 Treating minor strains and sprains
Protect = bandage or splint. Rest = Limit use of injured body part. Ice = Ice the injured body part. Compress = Wrap firmly with a bandage. Elevate = Raise injured body part above the level of the heart if possible.

4 Fracture (vocab) A break in the bone.

5 Dislocation (vocab) A separation of a bone from its normal position in a joint.

6 Unconsciousness (vocab)
The condition of not being alert or aware of your surroundings. Recovery Position

7 Concussion (Vocab) A jarring injury to the brain that can cause unconsciousness.

8 Nosebleeds Two main causes = Allergies/Dry Air and injury to the nose. Squeeze nostrils together and lean forward. If bleeding persists after 20 minutes seek emergency help.

9 poison Any substance that causes injury, illness, or death when it enters the body.

10 Poison control center (vocab)
A round the clock service that provides emergency medical advice on how to treat victims of poisoning.

11 Venom (vocab) A poisonous secretion.

12 Poisonous Plants Poison Ivy Poison Oak Poison Sumac

13 Review What are the symptoms of a fracture or dislocation? Why is the recovery position the safest position for an unconscious person? What is the first step in any case of suspected poisoning?
