Learning targets for today I can explain the roles Samuel Slater and Eli Whitney had in the Industrial Rev in the US I can explain what the factory system is I can discuss how Industrial Revolution changed the US.

Factories Samuel Slater- memorized plans for a factory in England. Snuck out of England and came to America. Started factory in Rhode Island. Why the North- need fast flowing rivers to run the machines. Southern rivers were slow moving Factory System- Bringing workers and machines together under one building

Threshing H G R I T E N H S

Why build in the North need fast flowing rivers to run the machines. Southern rivers were slow moving Now jobs are available in the North. Those people in the south that do not own land or looking for something better head North The population in the South declines. The people that stay are those with either small farms or plantations or businesses

Basement E S S N B E T A M

Interchangeable parts- - Invented by Eli Whitney. Parts are built exactly alike. This helps with the building and maintenance of goods. Do not need “specialized” parts or skilled workers to replace or build them

Industrial Revolution- Using “new tech” to make and build goods at a higher Volume. Replaced the “old” production method of 1 person 1 thing. In the US manufacturing replaced farming as the main form of work

Working at the Mill Slater starts the 1 st textile mill in the US. Lowell 1 st to use women as workers Brought about the factory system ( workers and machines under 1 roof) located in N.E. to start because of the fast moving rivers

Rehearser R E S E A E H R R

Harnessing steam Using steam to run engines in machines. Steamboat could be used to travel up and down rivers/waterways much quicker than sailing ships. Trains used to get materials and goods to and from areas that boats could not reach. Could carry larger amounts of cargo then steamships.

Inventors T O R S I N V E N

Telegraph quick communications between places over any distance. Electrical pulses were used to make letters which in turn would spell out the message. Invented by Samuel Morse.

Technology Using the new ideas to make life “easier”. Machines such as the mechanical reaper/thresher are making the jobs easier for the workers.
