The 1960s!!! Presentation By: Natazia Green

Fashion Reflects Culture First lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, became widely known for her beauty, grace and elegant style of dress. Her public attendances popularized pearl necklaces, the pillbox hat (a small hat with a flat top and straight sides) and simple, big-buttoned suits. The late 1960s were the exact opposite. Bright, swirling colors. Psychedelic, tie-dye shirts and long hair and beards were commonplace. Woman wore unbelievably short skirts and men wore tunics and capes. The graphic tee became popular in the sixties, mostly directed towards a particular world problem of the time. For example, many peace signs were printed on to shirts in protest of the Vietnam War. Women’s clothing became more masculine while men’s clothing became more feminine. Waist lines disappeared The space exploration opened up ideas for a more futuristic world hence the futuristic clothing Though times were filled with violence and protests, fashion was the complete opposite with fun and fantasy designs

André Courrèges

French designer, André Courrèges, was born March 9, 1923. He graduated in engineering before he studied fashion and textile design. For ten years, he worked with Balenciaga, which allowed him to develop great skills in cutting garments. In 1967 he showed haute couture creations and ready-to-wear fashions for his boutique, Couture Future, with distribution controlled through licensed outlets. His designs remained simple, with a lack of nostalgia, and included inventions like the hip-hugger pants with halter tops, transparent tops, sequined jumpsuits, and vinyl- trimmed suits and coats. In 1961 he established his own fashion house and began to develop a different look. In 1964 designs included angular mini dresses and trouser suits. It was created by using heavyweight fabrics like gabardine. White became his trademark. Many of the outfits had cut-out midriffs and backs and were worn without a bra. These were matched with flat boots, goggles and helmets inspires from equipment worn by astronauts. The stark shapes and white and silver color schemes immediately earned the name Space Age. Some say that he created the mini skirt while others say that Mary Quant created the mini skirt. It is still disputed today over who really created the look.

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent was born on August 1, 1936 in Oran, Algeria. He was very talented at making paper doll s and patterns for dresses. He began to make dresses for his sister and mother in his teen years. He had a hard childhood growing up because he was bullied for appearing gay to the other boys. His mother made an appointment for him to meet the head of French Vogue magazine where he landed the first assistant job ever for Dior. As a teen, he moved to Paris to work for designer Christian Dior He instantly gained praise for his dress designs. He was removed from his position at Dior after he was called to fight in Algeria’s revolutionary war. In 1966, he launched his own fashion labels, where his adaptations of tuxedos for women reaped him fame. He was the first living designer to receive a solo exhibition in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983.He outfitted women in blazers and smoking jackets, and introduced attire like the pea coat to the runway. His signature pieces also included the sheer blouse and the jumpsuit. His LSD use in Marrakech inspired a shift in his work. It shows a couture collection mixing different eccentric styles, including safari jackets, a jumpsuit, and a sheer black silk- chiffon dress with breasts visible beneath. In 1964 André Courrèges reveals his Space Age collection and is welcomed as the new couture star. In an attempt to regain the title, Saint Laurent put out two relatively conservative collections, which got him negative reviews. He died in Paris on June 1, 2008 from brain cancer. The YSL franchise still designs clothing and perfumes today.
