2 Fingerprinting Activity Listen to the directions. You will work in lab groups. Materials: 1 ink pad 1 piece of paper Analyze results, examine differences.

3 What is Genetic Engineering? (Write this down.) Genetic engineering is the transfer of genes from one organism to another. We can recombine pieces of DNA from different organisms. WHY? To cure diseases (still in progress) To treat diseases Food Crops Livestock Basic Research Tool

4 Gene Splicing (Write this down.) Restriction enzymes cut DNA at precise spots. The restriction enzyme used most often is Endonuclease. It cuts the desirable DNA chunk out so it can then be put into another organism.

5 The jellyfish glow gene has become a powerful tool for studying molecules inside living cells.

6 Gene Splicing Example: The Glowing Tobacco Plant R.E. cuts the “glowing” gene from a firefly’s DNA. R.E. cuts open the tobacco plant’s DNA and the “glowing” gene is placed inside. Ligase enzyme is used to seal or glue the DNA back together. End result: Recombinant DNA

8 52 % of cotton grown last year was genetically engineered with a bacteria gene to resist bugs.

9 Glow in the Dark Mouse A glowing mouse that had the glowing jellyfish gene implanted.

10 A cat in Korea was engineered to glow in the dark. How could this help with disease research? The cat’s skin glows.
