2 The 10 Commandments & The Negative Confessions In your group complete the chart: Write in the Ten Commandments(pg 13) Write in the Negative Confessions that match the Ten Commandments (some Commandments will have more than 1 Confession) State if the Commandment/Confessions are dealing with Religious, Personal, or Public Laws

5 Monotheistic Religion – Tradition developed in southwest Asia that helped shape democratic rule – Humans created in God’s image, gives them dignity – People have moral freedom & responsibility for choices Ten Commandments – Hebrew code that focused more on morality and ethics and less on politics Section 2 Judeo-Christian Tradition Monotheism: the belief in one God morality: defining the difference between right and wrong ethics: how to behave in society

6 Legacy of Monotheistic Religions from Southwest Asia – Ideas that emerge are crucial to the development of democracy Duty of individual/community to fight oppression Worth of the individual & equality of people before God Legacy of Renaissance & Reformation – Both promote democracy: Challenge authority of pope & rulers (Roman Catholic Church influenced religious, social, and political aspects of life) Stress value of individual Promote reading of Bible that leads to reading about other ideas legacy: what is left behind for others/what is remembered crucial: very important

7 Major Forms of Government In your notebook, divide a page into 4 sections At the top of each section the following: – Judaism – Christianity – Renaissance – Reformation Use your text/notebook to describe the democratic ideas that came from each

8 Judaism Emphasized the worth of the individual and the importance of social conscience Renaissance Emphasized the worldly, the importance of the individual, and the use of reason Reformation Emphasized the importance of the individual in establishing a direct relationship with god; it also questioned the authority of the pope and monarchs Christianity Emphasized the worth of the individual and equality before God

9 VIP Heads Fold your paper into 8 parts In each section you will: – (Left)Write the name and country of the VIP – (Middle)Draw and color a bust (head & shoulders) – (Right)Create a speech bubble and write a sentence that states the influence they had on democracy. Make sure to write in your own words. DO NOT COPY FROM THE BOOK!!! For this assignment you will use these 7 VIPs – Solon, Cleisthenes, Pericles, Justinian, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle When you are finished, glue this sheet into your notebook
