1 Trivia Fun Times Forever!!!!!  The Crusades were a conflict between what two groups?  What was the result of the First Crusade?  Why did Feudalism develop in Europe?  Today back in 2011, what space shuttle had its final launch?

3 Overview  England vs. France  Problems with French succession  England had land holding in France  Knights: excited to show their fighting ability  Changes in warfare  Peasants foot soldiers > Knights  New stuff: Longbows!!!  Three parts to the conflict (NOT one long war)

4 English Victories  Battle of Crecy (1346)  Use of longbows highly effective  Battle of Agincourt (1415)  Led by Henry V  French knights defeated  Gained northern France

7 What is a Nation-State?  Definition: Nation-State : a form of political organization in which a group of people who share the same history, traditions, or language live in a particular area under one government. Characteristics : 1.) Shared language 2.) Uniform cultural identity 3.) Common history (ancestry) 4.) Definitive land boundries 5.) Varies in size but larger than a city

8 Is Leclercstan a nation-state?  You live in a country where everyone takes pride in their culture. Basically everyone speaks Japanese. Everyone also goes to worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster on Mondays, which is a weekly holiday. Sports are enjoyed on Sundays by everyone as well. Your country is a collection of territories under one-centralized government. People take pride in knowing that they having a shared past. They know where they come from and where they belong. You think other people not like the majority should make their own place.

9 Is Sipostan a nation-state?  You live in a place where everyone gets along in your village. Everyone speaks French. You typically don’t like people who speak German or Spanish. You think they’re a little strange You and everyone else you know has a similar background. Also, your leader was elected from among the people of the village. You take pride in the local militia who is always ready to protect the village. There’s no way you would ever allow anyone to take over your village. It’s what you know and where you belong.

10 Is Goodmanland a nation-state?  You live in an interesting and vibrant society. The borders of the country have remained the same for awhile. You get along with all different types of people. You enjoy going to the grocery store where you find people speaking a wide array of languages. You can’t wait to go home and try this new Italian lasagna. Some people are speaking Italian in the store while others are speaking Arabic and English. You speak English mostly, but are trying to pick up a new language. Everyone in your country identifies with the political organization, but everyone comes from different ethnic backgrounds.

11 Is Anttilastan a nation-state?  The place you live in is enormous in land size. There are all different kinds of peoples. The diversity is amazing, but sometimes people get upset and fight each other. These revolts are brutally put down. Many people speak several languages. The money that everyone uses is the same though. It’s nice to go to different places within the country and still use dollars. Your leader rules from a far away city. You accept his rule for stability, and there is a relative peace. The country expands as your leader continues to conquer new places. You admire your leader and get excited over his successful military actions. It’s a source of pride for everyone.

12 Is Kosikstan a nation-state?  You live in a great place. You are loosely connected with other groups of people. In cases of emergency, you band together to fight off enemies. Sometimes you get together to achieve common goals for everyone. For the most part, each group does its own thing. Everyone speaks the same language, and there is a common shared history. You also have the same ethnic background.

13 Is Skeansland a nation-state?  In your country, everyone is ethnically similar. The vast majority of people in your country speak a specific Bantu dialect. You take great pride in the history of your people. You take classes specifically so you can learn more about your past. Your country expects this so everyone is connected. You absorb more territory near your country because the people who live there are similar and want to join with your country. This shared language, culture, and history connects everyone together. The king thinks is great!
