1 Gene Therapy and Genetic Engineering
Contemporary Issue – Genetic Disorders and Gene Therapy Lesson Goals To understand the nature of genetic diseases. To differentiate between chromosomal and single gene diseases. To understand the nature of Down Syndrome and diagnostic methods to detect it. To understand the important points of heredity including dominant and recessive alleles. To understand how to predict heredity using a Punnett square. To understand the nature and heritability of Huntington Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and Sickle Cell Disease. To understand the nature of genetic testing and it’s future application to diagnose diseases and the probability of getting genetic diseases. To understand the nature of gene therapy and it’s future application to cure diseases. Key Terms; chromosome chromosomal disease meiosis nondisjunction Down syndrome karyotype amniocentesis autosomal disease gene allele dominant recessive co-dominant widow’s peak genotype phenotype Huntington disease cystic fibrosis sickle cell disease

2 Your Goals: Create a Concept Map to organize what you know about gene therapy. Use the Learn.Genetics gene therapy website to help you. Integrate what you have learned about Genetic Engineering into your Gene Therapy Concept Map. Gene Therapy Vector Engineering Project.

3 Concept Map Overview A concept map is a technique used to organize information or thoughts. Concept maps allow you to organize lots of information into a form that is easily understood. Concept maps allow you to visualize connections within the information.

4 Gene Therapy Word List Targeting the right tissue Integrating the gene
Immune response Vectors Single gene disorders Naked DNA Activating the gene Disruption of existing genes in vivo Integrating the gene Fit inside vectors Keys to success Viruses Candidate diseases Liposomes Procedure Integration into the germline Risks/Challenges ex vivo

5 Gene Therapy AND Genetic Engineering Word List
Plasmids Hemophilia Identical DNA copy Recombinant DNA tools ADA Deficiency Restriction Enzymes Adeno Associated virus Sickle Cell Anemia Herpes Simplex Virus Identical organism copy Ligase Huntingtons Disease Retrovirus Cloning Adenovirus

6 Creating a Concept Map Step 1 Step 2
Start by placing your Main Idea in the center circle or graphic. Step 2 Decide which of the choices are your Large Topics and place them in a circle around your Main Idea. Draw lines connecting the Main Idea and the Large Topics.

7 Large topic

8 Creating a Concept Map Step 3
Decide which Subtopics belong with each Large Topic and place them near the appropriate branch. Cut the Topics out of the Word List so you can easily rearrange them until you have it right. Paste your Concept Map to your poster.

9 Concept Map! Large topic subtopics
