3. A clause is a group of related words containing a subject and a verb.
An adverb is a word that describes or adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective and another adverb, etc.
A clause is a group of related words containing a subject and a verb.
A clause forms a sentence or part of a sentence and often functions as a noun, an adjective or an adverb.

4. Adverb Clauses
ADVERB CLAUSES are called ADVERB CLAUSES because they function to describe or define the why, how, when, or conditions under which something happens.
ADVERB CLAUSES are easy to identify because they begin with the SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS you’re already used to identifying, words like: AFTER, IF, SINCE, WHEN, BECAUSE, ALTHOUGH, UNTIL.
ADVERB CLAUSES can appear anywhere in a sentence: as the sentence opener, between the SUBJECT and PERFORMING VERB of the INDEPENDENT CLAUSE, or as the sentence closer.

8. Analysis: Ex. When the phone rang, the baby woke up.
Notice: this sentence consists of a subordinate clause followed by a main clause.
The subordinate clause is a dependent clause begins with what is called a subordinating conjunction. This causes the clause to be dependent upon the rest of the sentence for its meaning; it cannot stand by itself.
