Welcome Back! Unit 2 - Muscle Anatomy The next exam is in three weeks… and is worth 120 points!

Here is the list of lab supplies you need: 1.Lab Coat (long sleeves, 3/4 length, get the right size so you can button the front). You can use scrubs or something, but you have to be able to take off your top every time you leave the lab room. You don't want to carry the chemicals into the hallway! 2.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0072ICHHW/ref=sr_1_federatedaps1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410534140&sr=8- 1&keywords=lab+coathttp://www.amazon.com/dp/B0072ICHHW/ref=sr_1_federatedaps1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410534140&sr=8- 1&keywords=lab+coat 3.Latex gloves http://www.amazon.com/Disposable-Latex-Gloves-Powder- gloves/dp/B000XRY2FE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533253&sr=8-2&keywords=latex+gloves http://www.amazon.com/Disposable-Latex-Gloves-Powder- gloves/dp/B000XRY2FE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533253&sr=8-2&keywords=latex+gloves 4.You just need Iris scissors and maybe a mall probe for dissection. The scissors have to be about 4 1/2", no bigger. Here is a good one 4.5" Straight Iris Scissor (don't get anything bigger, and don't get the kind that is blunt on one side) 5.http://www.amazon.com/SurgiDental-Economy-Surgical-Scissors- Straight/dp/B00ESTT0N2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533876&sr=8- 1&keywords=4%22+straight+iris+scissorshttp://www.amazon.com/SurgiDental-Economy-Surgical-Scissors- Straight/dp/B00ESTT0N2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533876&sr=8- 1&keywords=4%22+straight+iris+scissors 6.Mall probe: (don't get a sharp probe, just a blunt one) 7.http://www.amazon.com/Ajax-Scientific-Stainless-Seeker- Length/dp/B00EPQIOYE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533700&sr=8-1&keywords=mall+probehttp://www.amazon.com/Ajax-Scientific-Stainless-Seeker- Length/dp/B00EPQIOYE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533700&sr=8-1&keywords=mall+probe 8.Safety glasses (my favorite style...they don't steam up. The kind that straps around your head and clamps to your face all the way around tend to steam up and you can't see!) 9.http://www.amazon.com/MSA-Safety-Works-817691- Economical/dp/B000BO6RWK/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533816&sr=8-28&keywords=goggleshttp://www.amazon.com/MSA-Safety-Works-817691- Economical/dp/B000BO6RWK/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1410533816&sr=8-28&keywords=goggles 10.These safety glasses are available at Caduceus and also at Michael's art stores (there is one near Mt SAC) for $10 at either location.

How will I be tested? 1.Identify the muscle – pinned with a numbered flag – first muscle the pin hits 2.Give the origin of the pinned muscle 3.Give the insertion of the pinned muscle 4.Give one action of the pinned muscle

How will I be tested? 1.On cats, you will only be asked the name of the muscle. 2.On cadavers, you might be asked to give ONE origin on the muscle that is pinned, or you might be asked to give ONE insertion on the muscle that is pinned, or you might be asked to give ONE action on the muscle that is pinned.

#2 Name EXAMPLE. #1 Name

Muscle OIA Tutor Try my Muscle OIA Tutor for learning the OIA’s. You can download the PPT from my Lab Unit 2 Website.

What do muscles do? One of the functions of muscle is to generate force!!! It can only pull - not push during a contraction –Pulls insertion point closer to the origin –(Start learning the origins and insertions) This translates into movement of the skeleton –(Start learning the actions)

Origin – Insertion, Action You will be tested on the origin and insertions –Make sure to keep the origin and insertion separate when studying. You will be tested on muscle actions –You must give –1) the action term AND –2) the body part that moves –Flexion of the forearm –not just Flexion

Muscle Terminology  Muscle Actions  There are two methods of describing actions.  The first references the bone region affected.  For example, the biceps brachii muscle is said to perform “flexion of the forearm.”  The second method specifies the joint involved.  For example, the action of the biceps brachii muscle is described as “flexion of the elbow.” Copyright © 2009 Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Pearson Benjamin Cummings

Flexion Decreasing the angle of a joint Extension Increasing the angle of a joint

Lateral Flexion (trunk and neck)

Abduction, Adduction & Circumduction Abduction moves away from the midlineAdduction moves toward the midline Circumduction is to draw a circle with a body part

Rotation: Internal and External Rotation moves around a central axis

Rotation: shaking the head “no”

Elevation & Depression Elevation moves superiorlyDepression moves inferiorly

Protract & Retract Protract moves anteriorly Retract moves posteriorly  Retract mandible Protract  mandible

Supination & Pronation Supination moves palm anteriorlyPronation moves palm posteriorly Movement of forearm only

Inversion & Eversion Inversion moves sole of foot mediallyEversion moves sole of foot laterally midline

Opposition Special movement of thumb

Muscle Location Terms Deep Superficial Lateral Medial A B B is deep to A A is superficial to B

Helpful hints Compartmentalize! –Treat the anterior, posterior, medial and lateral compartments separately This will help you in grouping the muscles according to action

Naming Muscles Location (fibularis longus) Shape (deltoid) Size (gluteus maximus) Direction of muscle fibers (external oblique) Number of heads (biceps brachii) Location of attachment (tibialis posterior) Action (flexor carpi) Table 9.2 on p 253 –Learning how muscles are named will make it much easier to understand and remember the muscle names

Health and Safety 1.No horseplay. 2.Always cut on a proper surface. Never cut towards any part of your body. 3.Wear clothing that covers your feet and legs (no open-toed shoes). 4.Do not leave sharps lying around the lab. 5.Do not discard sharps in the regular trash. Use the special sharps container located on the counters. 6.Always wear gloves when handling preserved specimens. 7.Take off your gloves properly. 8.Wash your hands and forearms as soon as you take off your gloves. 9.Clean your dissection area and tools after dissection. 10.NO FOOD OR DRINK IN THE LAB. This protects you against contamination from dissection fluids.

Getting Started Get cardboard and a dissecting tray. Cardboard goes UNDER the tray. Get a cat, cut the bag near the edge (=inner bag), drain fluid into the sink. Get an outer bag. Label with your Cat name. Get a piece of string and two name tags. Label each tag with all student names on one side and your Cat name on the other. Tie one tag to the left foot, the other to the outer bag.

Proper Cleanup All cat parts (fat, etc.) need to be disposed of in the biohazard waste container. Gloves and paper towels go in regular trash. Put Cat in inner bag, tie it, then outer bag, tie it with group label. Cats need to be placed on their proper class shelf!

There is only ONE way to skin a cat!
