3 WHAT IS SOCCER? A game played on a rectangular field with net goals at either end and two teams of 11 players. Each team tries to put the soccer ball into the other's goal by kicking or using any part of the body except the arms and hands. The goalie is the only player who may touch or move the ball with the arms or hands.

4 HISTORY Modern soccer started in The roots of the game stretch back centuries More than 240 million people around the world play soccer today The game has evolved from the sport of kicking different objects around an area, into the World Cup sport it is today Soccer started more than 2000 years ago in China. England transitioned soccer to what the British call, “Football,” today.

5 HISTORY As the sport developed, more rules were implemented. By 1863, the first basic rules were established Tripping opponents was forbidden and using the hands and arms would soon follow The penalty kick was introduced in 1891 Red and yellow cards were introduced to ensure players obeyed rules, played safe and followed good sportsmanship.
