This they called a dungeon: keeping you in it two or three weeks or a month, or sometimes till you died there.”

3. First slaves arrived in 1526. Slave holders needed cheap labor. Not just blacks, not just the North

8. Family was VERY important. Slaves practiced new version of Christianity. Slaves told folktales.

9. Slaves found small ways to rebel against masters. Fleeing to the North was hard. Nat Turner’s Rebellion

10. Northwest Ordinance made slavery illegal. First settlers were slave owners. Many tried to get slavery legalized.
