3 First slaves arrived in 1526. Slave holders needed cheap labor. Not just blacks, not just the North

4 Africa was a beautiful place before slavery. 12 million people were taken between 1450-1850. 20% didn’t make it to America.

9 Slaves found small ways to rebel against masters. Fleeing to the North was hard. Nat Turner’s Rebellion

10 Northwest Ordinance made slavery illegal. First settlers were slave owners. Many tried to get slavery legalized.
