Slavery in America began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the production of different types of crops as tobacco. Slavery was practiced throughout the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries, and African-American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation. Most slaves died while being transported to America as the health conditions were poor and as there was a lot of people on the ship diseases were spread quickly. The remaining people who survived the journey would be put straight into a auction. People normally got separated from their families.
Music played an important part in the slaves life's because it helped them express their feelings. The slaves made instruments out of scrap materials e.g. wood and metal. The most popular instrument the slaves made was the drums. They played the instruments by your palm, fingerprints and sticks. The jawbones became scrapers when the teeth were scraped with keys and metal objects.
