And I know that homo sapiens means “man who thinks.” And there haven’t been any significant anatomical changes in this thinking man for 30,000 years. I understand that I’m no better than him. But what I want to know is this: Why did it take us 25,000 years to invent writing? What did we think about for all that time? And with no pen, no papyrus, no sharpened reed to dip in a mixture of soot and glue, would not what came to us, what passed through our minds, would it not all have been, by your own definition, poetry? -Taylor Mali 11.
