2 Fredonian Rebellion December 16, 1826 Haden Edwards is given a land grant to settle people around Nacogdoches Settlers are told to move if they cannot show proof of ownership of land Benjamin Edwards, Haden’s brother, decides to go into Nacogdoches with men and declare it independent, naming it the Republic of Fredonia They flew a red flag with “Independence, Liberty, and Justice” written on it. Revolt collapsed in January 1827 because the Edwards brothers received no help Mier y Teran Report Between 1827-1829 U.S. Ambassador suggested to Mexican government that they sell Texas to the United States The Mexican government becomes suspicious of U.S. interests in Texas They send General Manuel de Mier y Teran to travel through Texas and investigate He finds there is too much American Influence there (too many Americans compared to Mexicans living there) He suggests that the government do something about it

3 Law of April 6, 1830 Mexican government places law on Texas colonists Stopped Anglo American Immigration into Mexico Suspended empresario contracts that had not been completed Encouraged the immigration of Mexican and European families to Texas Set up new forts to control trade, stop smuggling and slavery introduction Placed custom duties on goods made in a foreign country Turtle Bayou Resolutions January 1832 Texas colonists make formal statements to present to Mexican government Santa Anna (president of Mexico) in a fued with Anastasio Bustamente (president of Centralist Party) Santa Anna follows Constitution of 1824 Bustamente does not Colonists declare loyalty to Mexico Denied wanting to rebel against Mexico Insisted they were supporting Santa Anna

4 Arrest of Stephen F. Austin January 1833 Texans met at the Convention of 1832 and 1833 to discuss changes that they wanted from the Government They sent the President of the Convention, Austin, to Mexico City to discuss these issues with Santa Anna He left in April, arrived in July and Santa Anna was not there He tried for months to speak with someone but problems kept that from happening He wrote a letter to the officials in San Antonio about the issues he was having in Mexico City Santa Anna arrives in November and they discuss everything: Texas will not receive their own statehood but they will appeal the immigration law Austin leaves happy When he arrives in Saltillo, Mexico, he is arrested for having written the letter Jailed for a year, released on December 25, 1834
