2. How was England's government different from other European governments? In the 1200s English nobility forced the King to sign a document called the Magna Carta which gave the nobles certain rights the king could not violate. In addition to the rights nobles were to be consulted in matters of taxation and war. Some Kings ignored these rights but most English Monarchs worked with the English Parliament which represented the Nobility. In the early 1600s a series of Kings began to rule England as absolute monarchs. Their rule and conflicts with Parliament over money and power would lead the country into a Civil War. King Charles I executed at end of English Civil War after refusing to limit government rights to tax (1649) Magna Carta signed limiting English Kings power establish citizen rights(1215) English Bill of Rights guaranteeing English civilian rights sign by King William and Mary (1689) Robert Walpole appointed Prime Minister Elected Official position that later replaces the King as head of Government (1721)

3. How was the Power of English monarchs "limited?" During the Restoration Charles II agreed to certain limitations to his rule. These restrictions included the right to Habeas Corpus which allowed prisoners to know why they were being imprisoned. When Charles II died his brother James II tried again to establish absolute rule in England. Parliament intervened by asking William of Orange to assume the throne. James II fled to France and William and Mary assumed the throne in the Glorious Revolution. William and Mary agreed to a Bill of Rights which guaranteed rights for English people: *Right to petition the King for grievances *Freedom of Speech in Parliament *No new taxes without Parliament approval *No suspension of laws After William and Mary all English monarchs were required to swear to protect the rights of the people of England.
