7 THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION 1918 Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, and Joseph Stalin proceeded to structure a Communist country as envisioned by Karl Marx “Land, bread, and peace for everyone!” Lenin promised

16 Stalin enters the war on the side of the Allies Before Allies could help, Germans swept through Soviet Union, ravaged territory they conquered “Scorched earth” policy: Stalin instructed all farm fields and villages in path of German army be burned to prevent German soldiers from living off land so they would be forced to stop Unfortunately, also meant destruction of homes and land of Russian people January, 1943 – Germans were DEFEATED in Battle of Stalingrad Soviets continue pushing Germans back toward Berlin U.S. troops move toward Germany from the west World War II ends in Europe in May 1945

17 STALIN’S LEGACY Estimated 20-60 million people died during his reign (an average of 12,810 – 40,000 people each week) “Death is the solution to all problems. No man – no problem.” “One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic.” Stalin’s terror ended on March 5, 1953
