2. How will you present the tasks/behaviors that you want students to engage in, in a manner that will generate enthusiasm (and intrinsic motivation) on the part of the students? Come along and I will show you…

3. Lights, Camera, Action We are going to ROLE PLAY: Nothing better than modeling the behavior you wish your students to display!

4. I will display the wrong way…..

5. And have them guess, write about and act out….what they think the right way is!

6. For Example! We always sit up straight in Ms. Young’s class We also come prepared, with all needed materials. We sit up and listen very carefully for instructions. We do not slouch, or fall asleep during class.

7. Fun…..Right? Who doesn’t want to see their teachers ROLE PLAY? I would still be interested at my age, if the professors at UAB Role Played the classroom expectations. It makes the rules seem less strict and more FUN! Especially when teaching children with special needs. They need modeling more than anything!

8. How will you implement effective instructional practices to keep students interested and academically engaged? 1. I will access each student’s learning style (kinesthetic, visual, auditory) 2. I like to break my class into groups for smaller instructional learning (I can do this because I have to aides) 3. Make sure to have a hook for each new assignment and use the I DO, WE DO, YOU DO

9. How will you use every opportunity possible to provide each student with non-contingent attention? We have what is called “Quiet Time” or “Cool Down Time” after lunch During this time I will call each student to my desk one on one for a “Check In” This can be an emotional check in, an academic check in, or whatever the student may need at the apparent time

10. The Thinking About Box I also have a box called the “Thinking About” Box I created this after numerous conversations with a particular student who always had a tragedy going on Since, sadly, there is no prayer in school, I use this box for students to write down what they want me to be thinking about for them!

11. Think Box The students receive a 3x5 index card every morning and they can write their thoughts for the think box. The only ones who see the cards are the three teachers in the room. It is also optional.

12. How will you give students positive feedback in a variety of ways on their progress/success in meeting behavioral and academic goals? Ticket System Treasure Chest

13. Following a Behavior Chart for each student….. The students will earn tickets for good behavior and for academics The ticket system works much like in an arcade You can save your tickets to get big things like DVDs Or You can cash in for small things like pencils

14. Ms. Young periodically rewards individuals and the whole class by…..

15. They Earn Cotton Balls When we “Catch” certain students or the whole class doing something well, we quietly walk over and place a cotton ball on their desk They know to put the cotton ball in our jar by the door When the cotton ball jar gets full, we get full too because………….THE CLASS EARNS A……
