1. Simple and compound sentences
A sentence must have:
1. a subject (noun or pronoun)
2. predicate (verb) and
3. be a complete thought

2. Simple sentence A simple sentence has one subject and one predicate
It also must be a complete thought
Here are some examples:
The cat is black.
The dog likes to play with its toys.
Fred drinks coffee in the morning and tea for lunch and dinner.
Here are some non-examples:
Plays the guitar: What is missing?
Journey to the end of the earth: What is missing?
Are eating at Eddie’s house: What is missing?
Because we went to the store yesterday.

3. Compound sentence
A compound sentence is two simple sentences put together
They are usually connected by
A comma and conjunction such as (and, but, or, so)
For example:
Troy went to the store, and he bought some milk.
She went to the wrong room, but she was not tardy swept.
2. A semicolon
Bananas are a good source of energy: I eat them after I run.

4. Simple or compound Write the correct answer and your whiteboard
Mike plays basketball. ____
John got to work on time, but he forgot his lunch. ____
Art and choir are fun activities. ____
I like swimming and running. ______
Run and hide! _____
Beth and Anne are cousins; their fathers are twin brothers. _

5. Run-on sentence
A written sequence of two or more main clauses that are not separated by a period or semicolon or joined by a conjunction
In other words, it’s a sentence that goes on an on and on and on
Run-on sentences need to be made into two sentences or a compound or complex sentence

6. Examples
Both of these sentences are run-on sentences Adam is a sweet boy he really loves animals. Adam is a sweet boy, he really loves animals.
To fix the top sentence either put a semicolon or a comma and conjunction
Adam is a sweet boy; he really loves animals
Adam is a sweet boy, and he really loves animals
To fix the second sentence, keep the comma and add a conjunction
