RUSSIA A brief history of revolution

Karl Marx 1818-1883 I am considered the father of modern socialism. Those who believed in my theories were said to practice “Marxism” (Though I’m German, I influenced millions of Russians)

V V You’ll get to know me later, but for now, Comrades, let me tell you why revolution was ripe in Russia. The people in Russia were angry for these reasons No workers’ rights Major class inequality Regular people have no voice in the government (Czars only!) Peasants want land Russo-Japanese war was a total failure Russian industrialization was very hard on the poor

Czar Nicholas Romanov II 1868-1918 As the czar of Russia, I got us involved in a lot of wars. I was not popular when millions of Russian soldiers died as a result. I, like all the czars before me, had complete and total control over all Russians

V V Vladimir Lenin 1870-1924 I was a lawyer turned revolutionary. I founded the Bolshevik Party based on the ideas of Karl Marx. “Peace, Land, Bread!”

Grigori Rasputin 1869-1916 I knew I should have been paying more attention to Russia… Don’t worry about it Czar, I’ve got things covered…. Meanwhile, during WWI…

The Bolsheviks staged the February Revolution in 1917. The Czar abdicated the throne

The provisional government was dissolved during what was called the October Revolution during the same year, and the Bolsheviks began to take over.

Russia’s Civil War --1917-1922, Resulted in the formation of the USSR and the Communist Party.

In 1918 the Czar and his family were assassinated

Hello Comrades! I am Leon Trotsky! I was a member of the Bolshevik Central Committee while Lenin was away, and I ran the Red Army during the war. I was both glorified and vilified… for good reason. Leon Trotsky 1879- 1940 (death by icepick)

Joseph Stalin 1878-1953 (if you remember nothing else about the Russian Revolution, remember who I am) Trotsky and I were prominent members of the Central Committee throughout the Civil War and after.

I died in 1924. A series of strokes left me incapacitated during the last year of my life. While I remained the official head of the Party other leaders like Stalin and Trotsky took over some of my duties. In fact my wife Krupskaya was a vital part of continuing the work of the Revolution.

II In 1927 I was exiled for the last time. I spent my remaining years in Mexico until I was assassinated in 1940.

Joseph Stalin New General Secretary of the Soviet Union As the new head of the Communist Party all decisions made by the Party were seen in the West as coming through me. This led many outside the USSR (and some within) to view my rule as a dictatorship.

Baby, through my Five Year Plan I will guide the USSR to economic success. This plan proved hard on the Russian people, but many still supported the effort as one necessary to modernize the country
