2 Adolescence Road From Childhood to Adulthood

3 BILLY “I will have to be gone for one week to get the supplies we need from town,” a farmer told his wife. “These supplies will last us all winter. While I am gone, Billy will be able to take care of the 40 acres of tobacco plants, and he is old enough now to use the riffle in case of an Indian or wild animal attack

4 BILLY WAS 6 His full name was William Clark. He later became famous for his exploration of the West with his friend and partner, Merriweather Lewis. When he was 6 he was not unlike other boys his age at that time.

5 Jonathan Jonathan is in charge of hunting all the meat for our family. If we have turkey on Thanksgiving or Christmas, it will be thanks to him. During the rest of the year, whether or not we have meat for our meals, or enough to dry and store, is up to Jonathan. If he has a bad hunting day, we eat vegetables.”

11 Developmental Tasks ✩ Prepare for Marriage and Family Life  Determine personal feeling about marriage and a family  Learn as much about marriage and family living as possible  Prepare yourself for that role

12 Developmental Tasks  Establish a socially approved gender role.  Adopt a set of standards for yourself  Identify personal attitudes about what it means to be male or female

13 Developmental Tasks ✩ Establish Emotional Independence from Parents  As child you were strongly dependent on parents  As teens most struggle between desire for dependence and need of independence  Learn to analyze alternatives  Make more decisions independently  Become responsible for your own actions

14 Developmental Tasks ✩ Develop Stable and Productive Peer Relationships  Peer interaction reaches a peak of importance in teen years  Making friends is important to overall social and psychological development  Personal importance shifts from self to group, allowing selfish nature of child to step aside for the needs of others.

15 Developmental Tasks ✩ Develop a Personal Sense of Identity  Recognize your uniqueness  Who am I?  What do I really want?  What role you adopt?

16 Developmental Tasks ✩ Adopt socially responsible behavior  Develop behavioral self-control  Learn to control impulses  Model your life after socially responsible people  Assess moral and standards you have been taught  Set your set of standards on what is right and wrong  Show good judgement
