Conditions that Interrupt… ROADBLOCKS TO DEVELOPMENT

Under Normal Conditions  Teens develop into responsible adults.  Developmental tasks can be interrupted by certain events, just as one can be physically stunted.  All energies are focused on the interruption instead of the task.  Recovery may take a long time, and normal developmental skills stay “stuck”.

Common Roadblocks to development  Crisis Level Traumas such as  1. Death of a parent  2. Parents getting a divorce  3. Death of sibling or Friend  4. Severe illness such as polio, cancer AIDS etc.

Living with Abuse  1. Physical  2. Emotional/Verbal  3. Sexual

Other Factors  TEEN PREGNANCY  DRUG AND/OR ALCOHOL DEPENDENCY  COMPULSIVE OR OBSESSIVE BEHAVIORS  Grades  Sports  Physical Appearance

After Trauma has passed…  Development will resume where it left off.  Then teen can return to normal activities  Going back to school  Seeing Friends socially  Etc.
