Irish revolt in Ulster 1641, the Irish of Ulster began an uprising 10,000 to 15,000 Protestant planters were murdered by the Irish Due to the English Civil War, the English did nothing about it But then, as Cromwell had time after he had succesfully gotten power over the Parliament and the king, he turned his eyes towards Ireland

3. Reasons An alliance was signed in 1649 between the Irish Confederate Catholics, Charles II and the English Royalists (who had been defeated). Ireland was viewed as a rightful part of the Kingdom of England and only temporarily out of its control There had been a rebellion in the beginning of the decade Cromwell and many of his army were Puritans and Ireland was a Roman Catholic country

In Ireland In 1649, Cromwell landed in Ireland The Cromwellian conquest completed the British colonisation of Ireland – Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland It destroyed the native Irish Catholic land- owning classes The drop in the Irish population varies (on different sources) from 25% to even one sixths

6. Cromwell sent Irish children to slavery: to work in sugar plantations in the West Indies This was good in his eyes because in future, Ireland would not be as big of a threat to mainland England (due to the long term population loss)

7. The consequences The grudge grew in the Irish people Cromwell is still deeply detested in Ireland The grudge exploded in the Irish War of Independance in the 20th century
