2. Problems with Margaret, Maid of Norway… 1.She was female! It was believed that women could not lead an army into battle. 2. She was too young to rule! A)She may die before reaching 18. B)She would need guardians to rule on her behalf… people worried this would lead to disputes. 3. She would need a husband! a)Choosing a Scottish noble could lead to civil war as nobles would be jealous of the one chosen. b)If she married a foreign Prince his country may control Scotland. 4. Many nobles just wanted the throne for themselves! Nobles such as Bruce and Balliol wanted to become King so did not want her to rule – worry that they would start a civil war in attempt to gain throne.

3. The Scone Parliament, 1286 Important Nobles met at Scone and agreed: 1. Margaret, Maid of Norway would be their Queen Scone 2. To elect 6 Guardians to govern Scotland till Margaret was old enough 3. To keep peace in Scotland

4. Edward I of England The Guardians ask his help to keep peace in Scotland... WHY???

5. Good Christian King: Bishops thought could maintain peace and order. Edward passed strong laws which controlled England. He could help prevent law and order problems in Scotland. Controlled Wales, Ireland, large areas of France. He showed a keen interest in Scotland. The Maid’s great uncle: so could help Scotland… WHY ASK FOR EDWARD’S HELP? Many nobles had land in England, so looked to Edward for help. People thought Edward would stop civil war breaking out between nobles who each wanted to the throne.
