2 The Magna Carta (great charter) British Document that sets the Precedent for future rights. King John was forced to recognize his power was limited by the Barons in 1215. First step toward limited government

3 Petition of Rights 1628 Parliament forced King Charles I to sign the petition. Parliament severely limited the king’s power. The King Could no longer: 1.Collect taxes without Parliament’s consent 2.Imprison people without just cause 3.House troops in private homes without the permission of the owner 4.Declare martial law unless the country was at war

4 English Bill of Rights 1688 After the removal of James II (“The Glorious Revolution”), William III & Mary II swore an oath to have their power limited by parliament. English Bill of Rights 1.Made Parliament stronger than the King or Queen 2.Monarchy could not interfere with elections 3.Needed Parliament’s consent to: suspend laws, collect taxes, and maintain an army 4.Protected rights to a fair and speedy trial by jury 5.Outlawed cruel and unusual punishment Individual Rights

6 House of Burgesses Founded at Jamestown in 1619 First representative body in the English colonies They made local laws for the colony Served as a model for other colonies

7 Mayflower Compact 1620 Pilgrims signed it Agreed to follow all laws made by elected leaders Representative Democracy Sets a precedent for a written plan of government.

8 Fundamental Orders of Connecticut 1639 Limited the powers of colony government Powers not given to the colony were given to towns Similar to federalism Separation of powers It allowed individuals to elect a Governor, Judges, and Representatives who made laws.
