1 Do Now: Would you rather live in Athens or Sparta? Why?

2 Vocabulary  Logic – n – rational thinking.  Rhetoric – n – the art of skillful speaking  Tragedy – n – plays that told stories of human suffering that usually ended in disaster.  Comedy – n – humorous plays that mocked people or customs.

3 Quick Notes  Some of the ancient Greeks greatest achievements lie in the areas of drama, philosophy and architecture. Many of Greece’s top philosophers are still studied today. Early Greek plays served as inspiration for later playwrights and some are also still performed. Greek architecture is still admired, and many modern famous buildings were built using Greek techniques.

5 Socrates:469 BC–399 BC  Athenian Philosopher  One of the founders of Western Philosophy.  Developed the Socratic method of questioning.  Opposed to “Might makes Right”

6 Socratic Paradoxes  No one desires evil.  No one errs or does wrong willingly or knowingly.  Virtue - all virtue - is knowledge.  Virtue is sufficient for happiness.

7 Socrates Death  Criticized the Athenian gov’t  Put on trial for corrupting the minds of the youth and not believing the Gods of the state.  Sentenced to death and drank poisonous Hemlock

9 Plato 428/427 BC – 348/347 BC  One of Socrates closest followers.  Wrote “The Republic” and “The Apology”  “The Republic”  Philosopher, mathematician, writer, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the 1st institution of higher learning in the Western world.

10 Plato  “The Republic” outlines Plato’s belief of what an ideal society would look like.  He felt the best ruler would be an educated “Philosopher King” Against Democracy.

11 Aristotle 384 BC – 322 BC  Plato’s student  Alexander the Great’s teacher  His writings cover many subjects, including physics, metaphysics, poetry, theater, music, logic, rhetoric, politics, government, ethics, biology, and zoology.  Created the foundation for the development of early science. (It was all wrong)
