1) Analyze how 3 ways the 2nd Great Awakening Americanized/Democratized Christianity 2) Explain how the Mormon Church is a uniquely American Christian religion and 3) Analyze how the Mormon Church a)has merit as a religion and b) could be seen by Americans as a fraud

2 ID-Religious Camp Meeting (321)
Summary 1- What is happening in the picture? Religious revival of people deeply and emotionally moved Summary 2-What did these meetings lead to in the US? Social improvement movements (abolitionism- anti-slavery) OI- Reviving Religion 1)What was the Founding Fathers view on religion? What religion arose from their beliefs? Science over faith, Unitarianism (God a one person, not trinity; goodness of human nature, free will, salvation in good works) Why do you think the founders of this nation wanted religion to focus on the works of the individual and science?

3 2) What was the Second Great Awakening?
Rebirth of religion in US 3) Who was the greatest revival preacher of the day? What were some ideas he brought to religion? Charles Finney (women to pray in public, against alcohol and slavery) 4) What group of people were most attracted to religion? Women (religion gave them purpose, role, way to meet men!!!)

Summary 3- Why did Joseph Smith believe Indians were special? Native Americans were descendants of the lost tribes of Israel ID- The Mormon World Summary 4- Why did the Mormon’s leave Nauvoo? Joseph Smith was murdered, feared for their lives from ordinary Americans

5 OI- A Desert Zion in Utah
5) Who was the founder of Mormonism and how did it begin? Joseph Smith, he received golden tablets from an angel that he translated into the Book of Mormon, 6) What made Mormonism unique among Christian religions? It was a uniquely American created Christian religion

6 7) Identify two reasons many Americans were wary of Mormonism?
Voted as a unit Cooperative/ Church and State connected (shared their wealth and gave much to the leaders of the Church) Polygamy (married more than one wife)

7 9) Think- Why do you feel the Mormon’s had to move out there?
8) Who took over the Mormon’s after Joseph Smith’s death? Where did he move the Mormon’s Brigham Young, Utah 9) Think- Why do you feel the Mormon’s had to move out there? They would settle in an area that their were no other settlers and they could worship freely, plus Utah was in Mexico, not the United States at that time

8 Analyze the motivation behind 3 reforms from the early 1850’s
Ch 15 P2 Goal Questions Prior Knowledge- Things of several major problems in our society. Why do you feel they are not being solved? Goal Question Analyze the motivation behind 3 reforms from the early 1850’s ID- the reform movement and reformer Explain the purpose of the reform Analyze what the problem was in society that lead to that movements popularity

OI- An Age of Reform 10) Dorethea Dix Reform of mental hospitals and asylums in US OI- Demon Rum- The “Old Deluder” 11)Neal S. Dow Temperance (anti-alcohol), Maine Law (1st state to outlaw alcohol) Does the government have the right to outlaw alcohol?

10 OI- Women in Revolt 12) Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton Woman’s Rights Movement 13) Seneca Falls Beginning of woman’s rights movement Declaration of Sentiments- blamed men for the problems women face What rights are women denied at this time? Women can not… Vote, job, property rights (divorce man gets everything), domestic abuse

11 Identify the key idea of each thinker
OI- Trumpeters of Transcendentalism (rising above materialism and finding a spiritual connection with nature) Why might people in a materialistic society search a more spiritual lifestyle? Ralph Waldo Emerson (founder of transcendentalism) Wanted people to be self reliant, confident, optimistic, and free

12 Henry David Thoreau Connect with nature and shed materialism and conformity (where everyone is the same and shallow) of society Civil Disobedience- refuse to follow laws that you feel are unfair (MLK and Ghandi influenced and copy Thoreau’s ideas) Walt Whitman Made poetry accessible subject matter included slang and sex (understood by ordinary people (no rhyme or meter), What type of art or poetry today would be similar to Whitman?

13 OI- Literary Individualists and Dissenters
Edgar Allen Poe Invented detective novel and subject matter was about dark subjects and horror Nathaniel Hawthorne Books explored evil in people’s souls and the fact that people can be generally mean spirited, esp. when they feel they are more right than their neighbor How are Poe’s and Hawthornes beliefs evident in the actions of America at this time? (Think Native Americans, African-Americans, Irish, Mexico)

14 Herman Melville Moby Dick- dealt with how business and industry was ruining American values (individual over the good of society, destroying nature (killing whales) to make money and live an easier life) What are some ways today that business is taking advantage and destroying the environment and people’s lives in the quest for profits?
