2 Potsdam Conference Allies meet in Prussian resort of Potsdam Truman,Churchill,and Stalin fought against the Reich, now their differences surface Stalin refuses to vacate the territories his red army occupied in the push against Hitler Some American generals advocate action against the USSR – Patton most verbal --- US only atomic power Truman reluctant to continue war– Stalin retains control over East Germany,Poland,Czech,Hungary,Bulgaria,Romania The western –half of the city of Berlin will remain free

4 Truman Doctrine US government pledges aid to any power resisting the spread of communism Millions in arms,cash given to Greece, Turkey to resist communist insurrections Domino Theory – concept that if one territory goes communist, their neighbors could also fall Marshall Plan – US government lent billions to western European countries to rebuild economically ( also deters spread of communism)

5 Cold War America, Soviet Union emerge as ‘superpowers’ An arms race begins when Russians detonate their first atomic device ( 1949) US, and European allies form NATO ( North Atlantic Treaty Organization) for mutual defense In response, the Soviet Union and her satellite ( puppet ) allies form the Warsaw Pact Churchill declares that an ‘Iron Curtain’ has split Europe… communist east, democratic / capitalist west
