3 III. The Plains Indians relied heavily on the horse and buffalo. a.Horses arrived because of the Spanish in the 1500s.

6 The Tongue- Buffalo Tongue Steak

7 To slaughter- so the Indians would starve.

8 c. Treaty of Ft. Laramie First major treaty between the government and Indians. Pretty much said the Plains were the Indians, but the U.S. could build forts and roads on it, and they would pay the Indians for any damage.

9 d. Treaty of Medicine Lodge Southern Plains Indians agreed to live on reservations.

10 IV. Notable People a.Crazy Horse- Leader of the Sioux. He acts as a decoy and lures 80 troops into a trap. This became known as the Fetterman Massacre. b.Buffalo Soldiers- Nickname given to an African American Calvary by the Indians. c.George Custer- Colonel for U.S. Army. Famous for the Battle of Little Bighorn. Custer wanted the glory in battle so he led his men into battle withouth reinforcements. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse’s men surrounded him and killed all his men. d.Sitting Bull- Sitting Bull- Leader of the Lakota Sioux. Had a showdown with George Custer at Little Bighorn in the Black Hills of the Dakotas. He was joined by Crazy Horse. Custer and 250 soldiers lost their lives. e.Geronimo- Geronimo- Apache Leader. He was the last Native American to formally surrender to the U.S.

11 V. Battles and Events a.Battle of Little Bighorn- Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse lead the Sioux and defeat George Custer. b.Massacre at Wounded Knee- In South Dakota. 150 Sioux killed. Marked the end of Native American resistance. c.Long Walk- 300 mile march in which the Navajo were forced to walk across desert to a reservation in New Mexico. d.The Ghost Dance- started by a Paiute Indian named Wovoka who was a prophet. It was a religious movement saying it would bring back paradise for the Native Americans.

12 VI. The Dawes Act Try to break up reservations.
