They refer to something not specifically known to the person you are communicating with. The normally points out some particular person or thing. Examples:  A Doctor  An English teacher Examples:  The apple you ate was rotten.  The book is very expensive.

We have a note book. She eats an ice- cream. Lion is the king of jungle. Jenny is a good girl. He ate an orange. Do you see the blue sky? Zinedine Zidane is a football player. We use an umbrella in the monsoons. The poor man has no money.

6 © 2015 albert-learning.com Articles Exceptions AN is used when the words begin with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). Pronunciation changes this rule. It's the sound that matters, not the spelling. 1) Sound of “O” a. An hour b. An honest man Here, “H” is silent so the words are considered to start with the vowel sound “O”, so “An” is used.

7 © 2015 albert-learning.com Articles 2) Sound of “YU” a. A university, A union, A unicorn. b. A European Here, the words begin with a consonant sound “YU”, so “A” is used. 3) Sound of “W” a. A one rupee note b. A one –eyed man. We say “A one” as one begins with consonant sound “W”, so “A” is used.

8 © 2015 albert-learning.com Articles Use of “ The” Definite Article 1) We use the when you know that the listener knows what you are talking about. For example: "The apple you ate was rotten.“ 2) We use the when you have already mentioned the thing you are talking about. For example: "She's got two children; a girl and a boy. The girl's eight and the boy's fourteen." 3) We use the to talk about geographical points on the globe. For example: the North Pole, the equator 4) We use the to talk about rivers, oceans and seas For example: the Nile, the Pacific, the English channel, the French Riviera

For example: the rain, the sun, the wind, the world, the earth, the White House.. 6) We use the to say that a particular person or thing being mentioned is the best, most famous, etc. In this use, 'the' is usually given strong pronunciation: For example: "Harry's Cafe is the best cafe to go.“ Note : The doesn't mean all :- For example: "The books are expensive.“(Not all books are expensive, just the ones I'm talking about.) "Books are expensive." (All books are expensive.)

Singular nouns and the first time we refer to a person, animal or thing. a child an elephant a television 2. We don't use A/AN with possessive pronouns, demonstratives or cardinal numbers. My shirt is dirty. This car is expensive. One person is in the reception. 3. We use ONE (or more) instead of A/AN when the number is important. There is only one exit from the airport.

11 © 2015 albert-learning.com Articles The Definite Article – THE We use THE with: 1. A singular or plural noun when it is clear/obvious which person or thing we are talking about. There is a lamp in my bedroom. 2. Anything which we identify immediately. We watched the new Brad Pitt movie last night. 3. Musical instruments (the violin, the guitar, the drums, the flute, the piccolo). She plays the piano.

Names of rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges and deserts (always in capitals). The Mississippi River The Black Sea The Andes The Sahara Desert 6. 13 © 2015 albert-learning.com Articles No Article We use no article with: 1. When we refer to general ideas, plurals or uncountable nouns we do not use THE. Religion is an important issue. (NOT The religion is an important issue) Mexican food is spicy. (NOT The Mexican food is spicy). 2. Names of people, books and plays (unless it is part of the title). I have read Romeo and Juliet. 3. Towns, cities, states and countries. Cape Town Montana Vietnam (Exceptions – The USA, The UK, The Netherlands, The Czech Republic …
