2 Sports O What is a sport ? O Set of complex activities in which winners and losers are determined by physical performance within a set of established rules.

3 Sports as Social Institution O A institution fulfills certain basic needs. O Those basic needs are O Family, Education, Government, Economic Systems, Religion O Sports fulfill and extra need within societies. O One of those extra needs being identification within society.

4 Sports in America O They play a central role, because of the emphasis on achievement. O They reflect the society as well. O Men dominate sports world, as they do in society. O Women come second to men. O However steps toward equality are being made.

5 Subcultures O What is a subculture ? O A group with a distinct roles, values, norms, and beliefs that is organized around a sport activity. O Examples: O Hockey and violence O KY basketball and expectation to win.
