To write well, you need to know how to write correct sentences. A sentence contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Subject = the who or what word that performs the action or the who or what word about which a statement is made:

Three hunters tramped through the woods. The blue truck belongs to Ralph. Her aunt and uncle love country music. aunt and uncle is a compound subject.

-ing words can be the subject of a sentence. Reading strains my eyes.

Prepositional phrases may confuse you as you look for subjects. (where or when) The sweaters in the window look handmade. On Tuesday, a carton of oranges was left on the porch.

Action verb: expresses the action that the subject is performing. The carpenters worked all day, but the bricklayers went home early. Linking verb: links the subject to words that describe or identify it. Don is a fine mathematician. Helping verb: More than one word, part of the action. The lounge was painted last week.

By 2020, San Francisco will become the first zero-waste city in the world. No city garbage will be sent to a landfill that year. But first, 800,000 residents are learning new garbage habits. Children in San Francisco now get recycling lessons in school. At malls and local Starbucks, videos remind shoppers to use the correct color-coded bins.

Spotting complete ideas is the key building block in correcting many serious errors: comma splices, fragments, and verb errors.
