 To write well, you need to know how to write correct sentences.  A sentence contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.  Subject = the who or what word that performs the action or the who or what word about which a statement is made:

 Three hunters tramped through the woods.  The blue truck belongs to Ralph.  Her aunt and uncle love country music.  aunt and uncle is a compound subject.

 -ing words can be the subject of a sentence.  Reading strains my eyes.

 Prepositional phrases may confuse you as you look for subjects. (where or when)  The sweaters in the window look handmade.  On Tuesday, a carton of oranges was left on the porch.

 Aboutbeforeinthrough  Abovebehindintoto  Acrossbetweenliketoward  Afterbynearunder  Alongduringofuntil  Amongforonup  Atfromoverwith

 Action verb: expresses the action that the subject is performing.  The carpenters worked all day, but the bricklayers went home early.  Linking verb: links the subject to words that describe or identify it.  Don is a fine mathematician.  Helping verb: More than one word, part of the action.  The lounge was painted last week.

 By 2020, San Francisco will become the first zero-waste city in the world.  No city garbage will be sent to a landfill that year.  But first, 800,000 residents are learning new garbage habits.  Children in San Francisco now get recycling lessons in school.  At malls and local Starbucks, videos remind shoppers to use the correct color-coded bins.

 Spotting complete ideas is the key building block in correcting many serious errors: comma splices, fragments, and verb errors.

 Complete the review and follow directions carefully.  Next week: Coordination, subordination, semicolons, conjunctive adverbs, review.
