2. Wednesday February 1, 2012 Daily goal(s): Understand why people came to the American Colonies, the difference between the New England and Southern Colonies and the purpose of the Black Codes. Think About it… Do you know when your family came to America? What motivated them to come here? What did America offer to them that their country did not?

4. Jamestown Jamestown was funded by a joint-stock company- a group of investors who put their money together to make a profit on a big project. What type of business today is funded similarly?

5. 5 LARGE SCALE FARMING DOMINATED THE SOUTHERN COLONIES

6. Southern Colonies The South was dependant on cash crops like Tobacco. Farming was labor intensive and the large Plantations depended on slave labor.

7. Religious Experiments Some colonies were formed to give persecuted religions a home. Maryland welcomed Catholics. William Penn founded Pennsylvania as a “holy experiment” which offered Quakers a home.

8. Pilgrims Came to the colonies so they could practice their religion freely. Most of the New England colonies were founded for religious freedom.

10. By the mid 1700’s England has 13 colonies along the East Coast of North America.

11. Slave Codes Laws that banned African slaves from owning property, receiving an education, moving freely, or meeting in large groups. The laws were meant to keep Africans at the bottom of society.
