1 Chapter 5 lesson 1-2 By: Sarah Johnson & Sammi Taylor 2 nd period

2  Renewable- a natural resource that can be used and replaced over a relatively short time.  Ex: Trees  Non-renewable- a natural resource that can not be replaced or can be replaced only over thousands or millions of years.  Ex: Coal

3  Recycling- the process by which used or discarded materials are treated for reuse.  Ex: reuse water bottles, you can also reuse your Wal-Mart or Food Lion bags for your trash or to pick up animal feces.

4  Energy Resources- natural resource that humans use to produce energy.  Ex: Solar Panels, & Wind Turbines  Fossil Fuels- Non-renewable energy sources that form in the Earth’s crust over millions of years from the buried remains of once-living organisms.  Ex: coal, oil, and natural gas.

5  Petroleum- or cruDE OIL, AN OILY MIXTURE OF FLAMMABLE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS FROM WHICH LIQUID FOSSIL FUELS AND OTHER PRODUCTS SUCH AS, ASPHALT ARE SEPERATED.  Ex: oily recovery

6  Natural Gas- gaseous fossil fuels  EX. Methane

7  Coal- a solid fossil fuel formed underground from buried, decomposed plant material

8  Strip Mining- the process in which rock and soil are stripped from the Earth’s surface to expose the underline materials, to be mined  EX. Mined coal or tar sand

9  Air pollution- rain or snow that has a high acid content due to air pollution.  Smog- a photochemical fog produced by the reaction of sunlight and air pollutants.
