2 Non Verbal Communication  Non verbal Communication is the interaction between people without words but with gestures, facial expressions, eye contact etc.  Is the process of exchanging information through sending and receiving wordless messages.  Is usually face to face interaction and it depends from environmental conditions where communication takes place, the physical characteristics of the communicators, and behaviors of communicators during interaction.

3 Some ways to communicate without words:  gestures  Eye contact  Facial expressions  Posture  Body language  Tone of voice  Appearance  Personal space Non Verbal Communication

4 Importance of Non Verbal Communication  Usually is used to make the verbal message stronger  Is used to repeat the verbal message  Is used to complement the verbal message  Sometimes is used to replace the verbal message “Actions speak louder than words.”

5  The majority of our feelings and intentions are sent through non verbal communication.  Non verbal communication is important because most people believe how you say it more then what you say.  The nonverbal signals you send either produce a sense of interest, trust and desire for connection.  It is believed that non-verbal communication is continuous, while verbal communication is discontinuous. 6  Verbal activity never stands alone, it’ s always joined by non verbal action.  In order to achieved a successful non verbal communication, the speaker and the interpreter have to use the same codes of non verbal communication Importance of Non Verbal Communication

7 Uses of Non Verbal Communication  Modifying speech Non-verbal communication has an important effect on what is communicated.  Replacing speech Communication can be usually done without speaking  Expressing emotion Emotions are expressed through non-verbal communication, where the voice and body can tell a lot more about how you feel than words.  Controlling conversation Non-verbal signals are used a great deal in requesting, offering and managing control of who is speaking.

8 Different use  Each culture use non verbal communication in different way  If you are not familiar with the local body language you may be misunderstood, and sometimes misinterpret the local nonverbal messages.  Non-verbal action can be dynamic but usually it is patterned by the respective culture. A successful interpretation of non-verbal elements conveyed same understanding of the symbols shared between interpreter and speaker.  Non verbal behavior varies from culture to culture, which means it is specific to each culture and may be interpreted differently.

9 Examples of different use  Chinese don’t point with the finger but with an open hand.  Chinese tend to smile easily when they feel difficulty or embarrassment.  Americans keep a distance from the person who converse  In Britain, hugging, kissing and touching is usually reserved for family members and very close friends.
