1 Regional Economies Create Differences
Chapter 7 Section 1

2 Eli Whitney In 1801, John Adams witnessed a presentation by inventor Eli Whitney of the first musket made of interchangeable parts. His musket was made by hand, but his efforts were the first steps toward developing tools with which unskilled workers could make uniform parts. Better tools sped up the manufacture of goods and improved their reliability. Inventions and ideas such as these would affect different regions of the US in different ways.

3 Another Revolution Effects America
During the 19th century, new approaches to manufacturing, such as Whitney’s interchangeable parts, took industry out of American households and artisan’s workshops. Factories became the new centers of industry! The factory system – using power-driven machinery and laborers assigned to different tasks – made mass production possible.

4 What is an Industrial Revolution?
The changes in manufacturing brought about an INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION What is an Industrial Revolution?

5 Great Britain Starts a Revolution
The Industrial Revolution actually first began in Great Britain. During the 18th century, inventors came up with ways to generate power using swiftly flowing streams and bountiful supplies of coal. Inventors then developed power-driven machinery and ways to use this machinery to quickly mass-produce goods such as textiles British merchants built the first factories.

6 The Industrial Revolution in the United States
The primary source of income in America after the Revolutionary war was international trade, NOT manufacturing. Farms and plantations produced agricultural products such as grain and tobacco, which were shipped to Great Britain, and southern Europe, and the West Indies. However, the Embargo Act of 1807 and the War of 1812, turned the attention of Americans to domestic industry.

7 Two Economic Systems Develop
You will be divided into 6 groups (3 North & 3 South)- each group will use both their textbooks and chrome books to research economic systems of each region. You will be responsible for researching agriculture vs. industry - and explaining the main ideas (textile mills, the cotton gin, etc.) of both and highlighting the role of slavery in each region. After you have researched the 3 individual groups will combine to form two large groups. The groups will then explain what they found to each other and they will determine the 6 most important facts that they learned. Those 6 most important facts will then be explained to the opposing region's group.
