4 Ms. Cephas I am happy to be celebrating my 4 th year at Accokeek Academy and happier to share Mrs. Stine’s 2 nd consecutive year teaching Language Arts and Social Studies. I am the proud catmom of Gabriel and Mishael. My passion as an educator is helping children with different learning styles achieve success. When I am not in the classroom I enjoy cooking and baking, as well as crafting! We are looking forward to a year that will be “GREAT BY CHOICE!

5 Mrs. Stine This is my 2 nd year at Accokeek Academy and I love being here. I’ve taught many different things in my 13 years of teaching. I’ve been married for 21 years, I have 2 children and one cat. Reading is my passion!

6 Our Day

7 School Supplies Come to school daily and bring all required materials including three sharpened pencils, textbook, paper, and other learning tools. Other items you will need –colored pencils & markers, glue stick, highlighters, scissors, flash drive and tissues.

How can change be significant?  Embedded Assessments: Personal Narrative and Short Story Springboard Unit 2  Essential Question: How can talking and working with others help one analyze a novel?  Embedded Assessments: Responding to literature and expository essay

9 6 th Grade RELA  Springboard Unit 3  Essential Questions:  Why do we have controversy in society?  How do we communicate in order to convince others?  Embedded Assessments: Research and debate a controversy Write an argumentative letter  Springboard Unit 4 Essential Questions: How can research shape one’s understanding of literacy text? How is reading a text similar to and different from viewing and performing a text? Embedded Assessments: Research and present Shakespeare Presenting Shakespeare

10 World Culture World Cultures and Geography is a two-year course in Prince George‘s County Public Schools that is covered in the sixth and seventh grades. The Western Hemisphere is covered in the sixth grade, while the Eastern Hemisphere is covered in seventh grade.

11 History Day 2015 All 6 th grade students are required to participate. The theme this year is: Leadership and Legacy in History

14 Class Rules Respect yourself, your peers and adults. Come to class prepared with all materials and assignments No eating or drinking in class Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking Stay in your seat and wait for permission to get up

15 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS FIRST 5 minutes of class: – Sharpen pencils – Place homework in center of table – Copy homework – Start on warm-up Respect and treat teachers’ and peers’ property the way you want yours treated. No gum, candy, mints, cough drops or drink in the classroom Raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged; do not call out.

16 Classroom Expectations Be prepared for class with agenda book, binder, assignment and pencils sharpened. Electronics or cell phones may be used for instructional purposes only during specified class time. No passes will be given out the first five minutes or the last five minutes of class. Bathroom/water breaks will be limited.

18 At the beginning procedures Beginning the day: Enter the room politely and sit in your assigned seat; begin the warm –up that is on the board. There will be no talking while warm up is being done. Entering the room: Enter quietly and politely; don’t interrupt other students; follow the procedures for each time of day (e.g. morning, after lunch, after a special class). Heading your assignments: Name Subject Mod Date

19 PASSING IN PAPERS PROCEDURES Please turn in homework at the beginning of class, place it in the center of your table. Class work will also be turned in the same way. A teacher will come around and collect the pile from each group.

20 Restroom and Water: Please raise your hand and ask for permission to leave the room. If whole group instruction is going on we may ask you to wait until a more appropriate time. If you are not allowed to leave, there will not be a discussion about it. You must have a pass to leave the room.

21 At the End of class… Leaving the Classroom: – Clean off your desk, pick up any trash around your work area, collect your items and wait quietly to be dismissed. – The bell does not dismiss you, your teacher does.

22 Disciplinary Procedures What Happens if You Don’t Follow the Rules? Individual verbal warning Classroom discipline slip Student will be asked to take a time out and contemplate their actions Student/teacher conference Phone call home to parent /guardian Lunch detention Parent/teacher/student conference Parent shadow during class Referral to administration

23 Absences policy You are responsible for making up work when you are absent. Please see your teacher for missing assignments and due dates.

24 Homework policy Homework is due the following school day unless it is an extended project. Please don’t make excuses for not having your homework. You either have it or you don’t!
