1
The Scientific Method Defined: step by step procedure of scientific problem solving (5) Major steps are listed below
2
The Scientific Method Problem or Question Hypothesis
Experimentation to test hypothesis Analysis Conclusion
3
Problem or Question Some question or problem to which you do not know the answer
4
Hypothesis An educated guess based on research, observation, and inferences If I do ___, Then something will happen.
5
Experimentation Designed to prove or disprove the hypothesis
Every experiment should include: a. Variables b. Constants c. Control Group
6
Variables Independent Variable – This is the thing that you manipulate or change ( usually the thing that you are trying to find out about {the if in your hypothesis} ) Dependent Variable – This is what is being changed because it depends on the independent variable (This is what you measure {then this happens})
7
Constants This is the part of the experiment that does not change
8
Control Group This is a subject of study that is outside of the actual experiment. The control group gives us something to compare the experimental results with. The control will be set up exactly like the experiment but without the independent variable.
9
Analysis Recorded observations Collected data Organized information
a. Graphs b. Charts c. Tables d. Drawings e. Other
10
Conclusion Based on observations and analysis, was the hypothesis correct, was it wrong, was anything new discovered, what did you find out, did new questions come up that you had not thought of before.
