2 Standard 8.1 Students understand the major events preceding the founding of the nation and relate their significance to the development of American constitutional democracy.

3 Objectives Students will… *distinguish between New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies. *Review the regional differences of colonial America. *work collaboratively to create a brochure to promote the best features of a colony, including the economic, political, and religious features.

4 New England Colonies Include Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Settlers came in search of religious freedom. Long, cold winters and rocky, hilly wilderness Economies based on small farms, lumbering, fishing, shipbuilding, and trade.

5 Middle Colonies Include New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Rich soil, large valleys, and wooded mountains. Farmers raised a variety of crops and livestock. Economies based on farming, lumbering, and shipbuilding. Settlers included French, Dutch, Germans, Swedes, Danes, Finns, Scots, Irish, and English.

6 Southern Colonies Include Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Broad rivers and vast wetlands Hot, wet climate Economy based on cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo. Life revolved around large plantations.

9 What is a Brochure? Your Task … Choose an American colony.
Create a brochure that will convince future settlers that your colony is the best in colonial America. A pamphlet or booklet written to appeal to the reader, describing a person place or thing.
