2 Broadcasting from the historic Tribune Tower, WGN Radio has been a leader in the broadcasting community for 90 years. As leaders in the traditional broadcast world, we saw it as our responsibility to be leaders in the digital broadcasting world as well. With that in mind, we’ve recently launched The WGN Podcasting Network. Housed on WGN Plus, this is our podcasting home for experts and advertisers alike. Audio

3 Podcasting Smartphones and Bluetooth-enabled cars have made it easier than ever for listeners to load up their favorite programs. With iTunes, The WGN Plus app, or from the website, listeners can grab shows straight from the internet onto their smartphones. Last year, Apple said subscriptions of podcasts through iTunes reached 1 billion. RawVoice, which tracks 20,000 shows, said the number of unique monthly podcast listeners has tripled to 75 million from 25 million five years ago. 4 Why Should I Podcast? Podcasting is an on-demand technology. Listeners decide what they want to hear, and when they want to hear it. On one hand, this means you’re competing for their eyes and ears. On the other hand, this means that if they are subscribing to your podcasts, there’s an excellent chance they’re actually getting the information you’re providing to them. Podcasts are convenient and easy to consume. Once you subscribe to a podcast feed, new podcasts are automatically downloaded to your computer as soon as they are available. You can listen to them at your convenience. Podcasting is new and interesting. Just like e-mail was in its early days. People get bored easily and enjoy variety. They are naturally attracted to new things. Also, because podcasting is new, it’s not over- used like e-mail, where messages are frequently lost or ignored. Podcasting is a time-efficient form of communication. You can listen to podcasts while you do other things at work, play, and home, or during your commute. Some types of meetings can be eliminated in favor of podcasts, saving time and improving productivity People are becoming increasingly adept at choosing how, when, and where to consume information. More and more, they are turning to non-traditional media channels such as news feeds, blogs, and podcasts so that they can better control the information they consume. Podcasting’s popularity is growing every day. In addition to the promising potential of its growing appeal, podcasting has several advantages over other communication technologies:

There’s really only one rule for determining what you should podcast: it needs to be something that provides useful information or is entertaining to your audience – preferably both – on a regular basis. Otherwise, they won’t listen and continue to subscribe to your podcasts.
