4 Commissioned by PAMSA and German Technical Co-Operation National Certificate in Paper & Pulp Manufacturing NQF Level 2 Topic Specification: TC211Valve applications, parts and operations Collect Information Use Multi media Self Study Field visits Media search Interview experts Attend lectures Analyse, plan and make decisions Group Discussions Sketch Case studies List / Tabulate Develop recommendations Execute, test and evaluate Job assignment Make presentation Tabulate Draft a report Complete a test/questionnaire Learning ActivitiesTopic assessment criteria The assessor will observe and confirm that learners: Understand the purpose, functions and parts of valves. Understand the different mechanisms by which valves are opened and closed. Assignment Description WHATWHAT HOW Notional Hours 5 A group or individual exercise to interview a workshop specialist regarding the purpose and functions of valves in the workplace. 1.Tabulate the results from the interview to highlight the purpose of valves and functions of each valve type. 2.Sketch the different mechanisms by which valves are opened and closed. 3.Identify and name each part from a simplified valve sketch. 4.Complete a test in which learners have to complete missing valve information

5 Commissioned by PAMSA and German Technical Co-Operation National Certificate in Paper & Pulp Manufacturing NQF Level 2 Critical Cross-field Outcomes Identify and solve problems Work effectively with others Communicate effectively Organise and manage myself and my activities Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information Use science and technology effectively and critically Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems Use mathematics Learner and societal development US: TUM009/1Differentiate between valve designs & application theories associated with process plants TC211 Gate valves, plug valves and globe valves Be able to identify and name each component of typical valves Know the basic construction and purpose of gate valves, plug valves and globe valves Know the different types of these valves used, operating principles, their distinguishing features and applications Know the advantages and disadvantages of each of these valves

6 Commissioned by PAMSA and German Technical Co-Operation National Certificate in Paper & Pulp Manufacturing NQF Level 2 Topic Specification: TC211Gate valves, plug valves and globe valves Collect Information Use Multi media Self Study Field visits Media search Interview experts Attend lectures Analyse, plan and make decisions Group Discussions Sketch Case studies List / Tabulate Develop recommendations Execute, test and evaluate Job assignment Make presentation Complete documents Draft a report Complete a test/questionnaire Learning ActivitiesTopic assessment criteria The assessor will observe and confirm that learners: Know the principles, features, applications, advantages and disadvantages of a gate valve, plug valve and globe valve. Assignment Description WHATWHAT HOW Notional Hours 5 A group or individual exercise of viewing video material on gate valves, plug valves and globe valves. Use a garden tap as example for a group discussion. 1.Learners take a garden tap apart, and discuss how it operates, identify the different components, its closing mechanism and other features. 2.Make a sketch of a gate valve, plug valve and globe valve with captions. 3.Compare the main features of each valve type in a table. 4.Add a comparison of typical advantages and disadvantages of each of these valve types. 5.Complete a multiple choice questionnaire

8 Commissioned by PAMSA and German Technical Co-Operation National Certificate in Paper & Pulp Manufacturing NQF Level 2 Topic Specification: TC211Special valve types Collect Information Use Multi media Self Study Field visits Media search Interview experts Attend lectures Analyse, plan and make decisions Group Discussions Sketch Case studies List / Tabulate Develop recommendations Execute, test and evaluate Job assignment Make presentation Tabulate Draft a report Complete a test/questionnaire Learning ActivitiesTopic assessment criteria The assessor will observe and confirm that learners: Know the basic construction, purpose, features, operating principles, applications and advantages and disadvantages of needle valves, diaphragm valves, check valves and safety valves. Assignment Description WHATWHAT HOW Notional Hours 5 A group or individual exercise to interview a workshop specialist regarding needle-, diaphragm-, check and safety valves. 1.Tabulate the results from the interview to highlight the purpose, operating principles, distinguishing features, applications and advantages and disadvantages of each valve type. 2.Have a group discussion to consolidate the various findings. 3.Identify and name each component from a simplified valve sketch. 4.Complete a multiple choice questionnaire to confirm understanding of the subject

9 Commissioned by PAMSA and German Technical Co-Operation National Certificate in Paper & Pulp Manufacturing NQF Level 2 Critical Cross-field Outcomes Identify and solve problems Work effectively with others Communicate effectively Organise and manage myself and my activities Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information Use science and technology effectively and critically Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems Use mathematics Learner and societal development US: TUM009/1Differentiate between valve designs & application theories associated with process plants TC211 Handling and maintenance of valves Understand the possible causes of leakage in valves Understand precautionary measures used to extend the life of valves

10 Commissioned by PAMSA and German Technical Co-Operation National Certificate in Paper & Pulp Manufacturing NQF Level 2 Topic Specification: TC211 Handling and maintenance of valves Collect Information Use Multi media Self Study Field visits Media search Interview experts Attend lectures Analyse, plan and make decisions Group Discussions Educational games Case studies List / Tabulate Develop recommendations Execute, test and evaluate Job assignment Make presentation Tabulate Draft a report Complete a test/questionnaire Learning ActivitiesTopic assessment criteria The assessor will observe and confirm that learners: Understand the possible causes for valve leakage as well as the precautionary measures used to extend the life of valves. Assignment Description WHATWHAT HOW Notional Hours 5 A group or individual exercise to interview a workshop specialist regarding the handling an maintenance of valves A group discussion to consolidate these findings into a single document 1.Draw up a checklist in which possible causes for valve leakage can be tabulated. 2.Draw up a list of precautionary measures that can be used to extend the life of valves. 3.Report back to the group with a short presentation of findings 4.Consolidate all the findings and compare with information obtained from the workbook in a short report
