12 Perceptual Skills of the Newborn ► Smelling  The baby reacts strongly to some smells, such as ammonia and anise (licorice). ► Taste  The baby can tell the difference between salty and sweet tastes and prefers sweet tastes; tells the difference between sour and bitter. Touch The baby responds to touch over most of the body, especially on the hands and mouth.
