Fostering worldwide interoperabilityGeneva, 13-16 July 2009 TTA Activities on standardization of Integrated I/O Interface for mobile phones Dr. LEE, HyeonWoo Chair of PG701, TTA Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) 14 DOCUMENT #:GSC14-PLEN-046 FOR:Presentation SOURCE:TTA AGENDA ITEM:6.1 CONTACT(S):woojaa@keit.re.kr

Fostering worldwide interoperability 2 New Standard on Integrated I/O Connection Interface for Mobile Phones (Revised in Nov. 2007, certified in Jun. 2008) –To meet the slimming & miniaturizing trend as well as to increase consumer benefits –Estimated cost saving : USD 10 M per year TV Out Cable Earphone + 20 pin New & Integrated USB Data Cable Battery Charger 24 pin (Since 2001) Incumbent Highlight of Current Activities Adapter for 24pin- 20pin is available

Fostering worldwide interoperability3 Proposed Strategic Direction It is very important to have single standardized charger and I/O interface for mobile devices User convenience Resources saving Cost saving for user and vendors Need to encourage the global /regional harmonization of I/O interfaces of IMT mobile devices as well as other mobile/portable devices Charging only Charging and data exchange Charging, data exchange and Audio/Visual connection Etc.

Fostering worldwide interoperability 4 Geneva, 13-16 July 2009 TTA standard on the integrated I/O connection Interface for Mobile Phones: Already published and widely used commercially in Korea GSMA UCS(Universe changing solution) Plan During MWC ’09, UCS initiatives was launched. (Joined by many vendors and operators) Based on Micro USB (Elec. & Mech. Interface), completion by 2012. OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal platform) Published common charging and local data connectivity document V1.0 on Feb. 2009 Challenges

Fostering worldwide interoperability 5 Geneva, 13-16 July 2009 IEC-TC100 (Battery charging interface for small hand- held multimedia devices) The draft standard proposal was submitted by Finland as a Fast Track project proposal to the IEC TC100 in December 2008 China Published 4 pin mobile Phone charger recommendation on 2006 Japan CIAJ started discussion on standard charger interface for mobile phone from June 2008, targeting completion by end of 2009. Will be based on micro USB Some guideline on Lithum ion battery was published on May 2008. Challenges

Fostering worldwide interoperability6 Next Steps toward integrated I/O connection interface Recognizing – To maximize user benefits of using single peripheral device, e.g. Charger, for different devices from different vendors. – To minimize the wasting of both costs and resources by customers to reuse one peripheral for several devices. Further collaboration on integrated I/O connection interface standard for mobile Devices - Potential collaboration with other bodies - Forward compatibility with UCS & IEC TC100 can be considered.
